Film Screening & Discussion
My Beautiful Laundrette is a 1985 British romantic comedy-drama film directed by Stephen Frears from a screenplay by Hanif Kureishi. The film was one of the first films released by Working Title Films. The film is set in London during the Thatcher years, and reflects the often fraught relationships between members of the Pakistani and English communities at that time. The story focuses on Omar (Gordon Warnecke), a British man of Pakistani origin, and his reunion and eventual romance with his childhood friend Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis), now a street punk. The two become the caretakers and business managers of a launderette.
The British Film Institute ranked My Beautiful Laundrette as the 50th greatest British film of the 20th century.[5] The film was adapted into a stage play in 2002 and 2019.

What is Drag, really?
A lot of people think drag is dressing up as the opposite gender, but drag is about more than that. At its heart, drag is about expressing our true selves. Using costumes, makeup, accessories and other items, people can use drag to critique gender norms and challenge society’s misperceptions.
Drag is often seen as exaggerated gender dressing- a drag queen or drag king- but it’s also a symbol of embracing the bravery and individualism that accompanies living as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Allies dress in drag to show support and love. When we gather together in drag, we honor and celebrate individualism and freedom of expression.
From HRC’s What is Drag? A Celebration of Non-Conformity:
“Drag uses clothes and other aspects of performance to create heightened versions of masculinity, femininity and other forms of gender expression. It is rooted in acceptance and resilience and is an artform that represents freedom of expression and resistance to unjust forces. Drag is a means to understand those whose experiences are different from our own, and a source of profound joy for millions of Americans of all ages, races, genders and sexualities.” Read more here.
If you are confused about what to wear to a drag party, don’t be. It can be as simple as wearing some glitter or as complex as an entire costume. The most important thing to remember is that you’re going somewhere where it is OK for you to be 100% your true, authentic self. You won’t be judged. You’ll be loved and celebrated.
